The Importance of Keyword Research

You may have heard that in order to rank high on search engines, you must incorporate keywords into your content. What you may not know is that researching those keywords is a very crucial step in SEO. If you target the wrong keywords, all your work may be wasted because you may end up not ranking well in the areas that you want to. Keyword research is a process in itself. It involves selecting the best keyword and keyword phrases that will ultimately help readers find your website. You can spend hours and hours writing your website copy, but without the right keywords it will be hard people to find. Even if you’re able to get your website ranked high on the search engines, without the right keywords the right people may not be seeing it.

The first step in successful keyword research is to identify your target audience. Once you know who you are targeting, you can start to research what keywords they will most likely be searching for in order to find your website. Brainstorm keywords that you think your potential audience and customers would plug into that search engine bar. Try to be as specific as you can. For example, if you are a plumber in Boise you do not want to target just the word “plumber.” Phrases like “Boise plumber,” “plumber in Boise” or even “toilet repair in Boise” would be better for getting people to your website.

There are many online keyword tools that can help you with your research. Here are a few free ones that have proven to work well.

The Google AdWords Keyword Tool will be especially helpful if you want to target readers searching on Google. Plug-in your potential keywords or phrases into the tool, and it will give you back statistics regarding how many searches have matched your keywords within the last month. So how can you use this information from the AdWords Keyword Tool? By paying attention to how many searches a given keyword or phrase has gotten recently, you’ll be able to gauge whether or not that keyword is worth using in your own content. If it has gotten relatively low searches lately, they may not be worth using since nobody is searching for it. However, the words and phrases that get the most traffic hold more power and are worth plugging into your website content since they will help searchers find your website.

Keywords are an important part of SEO and getting website traffic. However, the using the wrong keywords is just as useless as not using keywords at all.
